Gardeners Delight Nursery

Our traditional, small, family run working nursery has been growing for over 30 years at our site near Roundswell, on the outskirts of Barnstaple, in beautiful North Devon. We grow over 90% of the plants that we sell, grown using peat free compost and without the use of pesticides.

  • Perennials

    Perennial plants offer outstanding valueas they live for many years in your garden. They are grown for both their colourful flowers, attractive foliage and provide interest for many months of the year. Their versatility adapts them to be grown in borders, planters or pots Perennials are available for most soils and aspects, be it sun, shade, rich or poor soil

  • Clematis

    Clematis are climbers that can be used in a garden to cover walls, and climb pergolas. Many varieties of clematis are scented and evergreen, and many provide a second flowering during the year. Clematis will grow in humus rich soil, and in sunny to partial shade positions. We are proud to be a licensed grower of the Raymond Evison ranges of clematis probably one of the finest clematis breeders in the world. We also grow many of the older varieties along with Honey suckles and passiflora. All our clematis are grown in 2 litre deep pots ready to plant and not in small 9cm liner pots. click here

  • Shrubs

  • Alpines

    Alpines are plants that grow best in alpine conditions. These are things such as lots of drainages and poor soil conditions. Alpines can grow in sun to shady positions and can add bursts of colour to your garden. They can be planted in rockeries, as the conditions are well suited to these plants. They can also be planted in containers and pots, making sure there is holes and gravel for appropriate drainage.

Astilbes Best sellers this month

Astilbes are a group of plants which will tolerate semi shade and so are useful for those parts of the garden which do not have the benefit of much sun. Astilbes prefer damp or moist soil, and are suitable for waterside or semi bog planting as long as the ground is not waterlogged.  Growing requirements for Astilbes are simple;  a semi shaded place in soil which tends to be damp and does not dry out and in these conditions Astilbes are easy and unfussy plants.  Astilbe are suitable for all soil types, including acid soils, the only exception is dry soil.

Lobelia plants

vibrant, flowing blooms, they thrive in full sun or partial shade and prefer moist, light compost, flowers continuously throughout summer they are relatively low-maintenance and require regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Lobelia plants are also known to attract beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to garden biodiversity.

June Hints and Tips

    General
  • As the weather warms up keep on top of weeding as they will appear & grow in a couple of days. Hoeing on dry days works wonders as it also allows air into the top surface and keeps it open for watering.
  • Apply a good thick layer of mulch around plants to reduce the weeds but preserve the moisture in the soil
  • Acer bushes will have some dead ends, prune these back to a good leaf joint.
  • Plant up hanging baskets & planters with a splash of colourful summer bedding plants. My favourites are tuberous upright & trailing begonias as they dead head themselves. Vegetable Garden
  • Sow or plant runner beans early in the month, they will soon overtake those planted when it was too cold.
  • Sow salad leaves, this can be in a large pot or trough and repeat every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Plant out courgettes and sow some winter squash
  • Sow a row of peas and repeat in 2 weeks
  • Towards the end of June plant Leeks, this helps to stop them from bolting
  • Dig the first early potatoes
    • Lawns
  • Cut on high settings as to short and the weeds will come in
  • Apply a lawn feed but water in if it doesn’t rain
  • Fork any areas that are constantly used as path ways or were always wet in winter to reduce compaction
  • Re seed areas that have died off
  • Visit and support your local independent nursery as their knowledgeable staff will always give advice freely and the plants that they grow are the ones that will grow in your area the best.
  • Reduce how often you cut the grass as the weather heats up, slightly longer grass will hold moisture closer to the soil surface, or leave an area to grow and set seed for the wild life
    • Vegetable Garden
  • Start to crop all those delicious vegetables you have been growing
  • It was a very cold spring and many seeds did not germinate, make a note for next year and watch your local weather before sowing, later sown vegetables always catch up the early ones.
  • Take out side shoots on tomatoes and feed regularly
  • Plant winter squash and kale this month
  • Summer prune Apple and pear trees
  • Protect soft fruits from birds
  • Sit back and enjoy the effort you have put into your garden over the year and be inspired by the wonders of nature that you have helped along the way
